Ryde Hospital


Ryde Hospital is a 143 bed district/community hospital located on Denistone Road, Eastwood. It is a part of the Northern Sydney Local Health Network and refers to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Ryde Emergency Department has a presentation of approximately 24,000 per annum, of which approx. 15% are paediatric presentations. Admission rate is approx. 25% with critically ill and sub-specialised patients being transferred mainly to Royal North Shore, Hornsby and Children’s Hospitals.

It is stagged with Emergency Physicians covering 10 hours per day onsite with 14 hours on-call, 7 days a week. It is also supported with a full time Director of Emergency Medicine as well as a half time Director of Emergency Medicine Training (DEMT).

The Department is accredited for Emergency Medicine Training for 6 months with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM). In addition, the College also recognises training in other clinical areas of Ryde Hospital, including:

  • Cardiology (3 months)
  • General Medicine (3 months)
  • Rehabilitation Medicine (3 months)
  • Psychiatry (3 months)

Ryde Hospital has unaccredited 3 month positions in Anaesthetics and in the High Dependency Unit. There is also a 3 month rotation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital which is accredited towards ACEM training.

Ryde Emergency Department provides quarantined in-house registrar teaching. Registrars are given, in addition, 4 hours per week to attend external educational courses specifically focussed towards the Primary and Secondary examinations. College research/coursework requirements are coordinated locally through the DEMT and can also be accessed through the Director of Emergency Medicine Research at Royal North Shore Hospital.
