Coffs Harbour is the hub of the spectacular Coffs Coast region geographically located midway between Sydney and Brisbane with a population in excess of 72,000. The area is flanked by the World Heritage rainforests and National Parks of the Dorrigo plateau and the Bellinger Valley to the West and endless beaches and the Solitary Islands National Park to the East. Multiple flights to Sydney and beyond are available on a daily basis. Coffs Harbour Base Hospital (CHBH) is a busy regional referral centre built in the 21st century which offers critical care, general medical and surgical, interventional cardiology, obstetrics, paediatrics and mental health services. CHBH is part of the Mid North Coast Local Health District.
The Emergency Department is the largest between Newcastle and the Tweed Coast with an annual census in excess of 35,000 presentations (25% of which are Paediatrics). The Department has a 34% admission rate with 7.2 FTE FACEMs. Coffs Harbour Base Hospital is the busiest rural trauma centre in NSW and its ED boasts supportive “hands on” FACEM supervision 16 hours per day, 7 days a week. Ultrasound facilities are located in the Emergency Department and are utilised extensively in clinical care. It has a 5 treatment bay purpose built Fast Track area and a 10 bed EMU.
Coffs Harbour Base Hospital offers Australasian College of Emergency Medicine Training Opportunities which include:
- 12 months ACEM advanced training.
- Rotations through Anaesthetics, ICU and Cardiology.
- Protected Teaching Time/Exam preparation every week.
- Rural Salary Loading and Housing Allowance for rotating trainees.
- 1 return flight to Sydney every 3 months.
Coffs Harbour Base Hospital now boasts a recently built fully functional Simulation Centre.
